Congress MLA Nandita Das made a shocking allegation on Friday that several schools of Assam were used as polling stations during the recently-concluded Meghalaya Assembly polls.
The schools are located at Lampi in Kamrup (Rural) district. Lampi is located near the Kamrup (Rural)-West Khasi Hills border region.
Boko MLA Das informed the Assembly that Lower Lampi LP School, Khatapara LP School and Umtap LP School of Assam were used as polling stations by the Meghalaya authorities on February 27. “Even the Kamrup (Rural) administration and police looked the other way despite getting complaints,” she alleged.
The MLA also informed that 650 votes were cast in the three polling stations. “It is shocking as the schools are nine kilometres inside Assam side of the Assam-Meghalaya border,” she said.
Das alleged that such border areas have always been neglected by the Assam government, which emboldens the authorities of the neighbouring States to utilise the territories for their benefit. She also added that Lampi has tremendous tourism potential.
Replying on behalf of the State government, IT Minister Keshab Mahanta admitted that the areas are under encroachment. He also informed the House that as per an official report following the February 27 Meghalaya polls, the polling centres were shifted from the schools by the Meghalaya authorities.
It may be mentioned that lands of Assam have been encroached by neighbouring States like Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram in the past. Recently, a violent situation was witnessed at Hailakandi district in Assam-Mizoram border when some organizations from the neighbouring State allegedly tried to build a structure on the land which belongs to Assam.
