Silchar: A school in Assam’s Kamrup Metro district has named an entire classroom in memory of former teacher and renowned social activist Min Raj Joshi.
Joshi breathed his last in 2023 and a year after his demise, the school authorities dedicated the classroom after his name.
The principal of Raghunath Choudhary High School, Surya Prasad Sarma said that they felt honoured by doing this.
“Min Raj Joshi was one of the finest teachers I have ever seen and more than that, he was a great human being. We have learnt many important lessons of life. We have seen his dedication towards social activities and we feel proud of him,” he said.
The authorities said that the Raghunath Choudhury High School in Birkuchi was established in memory of the great poet and journalist of Assam, Raghunath Choudhury, in 1975 as a Hindi medium school under the Department of Education, Government of Assam.
Min Raj Joshi joined Raghunath Choudhury High School, Birkuchi, in 1985 and worked there till 1992.
He taught social studies and soon gained respect from his colleagues and students.
On April 5, the school authorities organised an event in memory of the late Min Raj Joshi which both students and the teachers attended.
The teachers said that this classroom will remind them as well as the students of the good works of Joshi.
On the first death anniversary of Min Raj Joshi, his family members organised an event at his house in Guwahati and a souvenir was also released on that day. Renowned writers, authors and social activists from across Assam as well as his family members wrote articles for the souvenir.
Taimur Raja Choudhary, editor of Assam’s one of the most circulated Bengali daily “Dainik Samayik Prasanga”, said that Min Raj Choudhary was his family member and his dedication towards education and social work inspired a lot of people.
“He was concerned about the economically backward classes in the society and dedicated a large part of his life to uplift them. He believed in the value of education,” Choudhary said.
Along with the special guests, his wife Deepa Joshi, daughter Charu Joshi and Sangeeta Joshi Baruah, son-in-law Tauhid Raja Choudhary, son Col Ajut Joshi and others attended the event on April 3.
Charu Joshi said that her father worked for the upliftment of the Gopalan Community (diary firm owners) and milk sellers.
“He believed that this community is one the most important parts of society but they were not getting the adequate support they deserved. My father was a member of many other social activist groups and participated in upliftment activities of several classes in the society,” Charu said.
The family members said that they will continue participating in the activities in which Min Raj Joshi was involved and will dedicate themselves to the upliftment of society, following his footsteps.
