At a time when the State Government is roaring high on its ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards graft, the activities in Harisinga Revenue Circle office at Tangla in Udalguri district depict a different picture.
The Land and Revenue Department of BTC on Monday suspended a revenue officer of the Harisinga Revenue Circle office on charges of allegedly taking bribe.
The long-time allegation of a section of public that the officials have to be bribed to move any file was proved true after a video of a revenue officer (Lat Mandal) of the circle office accepting bribe went viral in the social media networking sites.
Reportedly, the revenue officer, identified as one Numal Daimari, had allegedly accepted bribe of Rs 10,000 from a person for registration of land, while a voice in the video clearly mentions that the accused had been previously paid a sum of Rs 10,000.
The accused, Mandal, also allegedly confessed that a share of the bribe amount went to the circle officer.
After the video went viral on June 27 last, it drew sharp criticisms from Nonai Serfang MCLA of BTC, Suresh Tanti, Rangia MLA Bhabesh Kalita.
The Udalguri district administration informed the media persons that strict disciplinary action would be taken against the revenue official, who has been suspended by the Land and Revenue Department of BTC on Monday.
The locals have lauded the initiative and appealed to the authorities concerned for bringing other corrupt officials to dragnet.
