As mercury level in different parts of Assam soars up, sweltering heat has reportedly claimed one in Guwahati and the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar has issued warning of heavy rain over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the next 24 hours.
An unidentified old man collapsed due to extreme heat near a doctor’s chamber at Maligaon Chariali. His body has been kept in the morgue.
According to the RMC, Guwahati, North Lakhimpur and Jorhat recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degree Celsius while Silchar recorded highest temperature of 38.4 degree Celsius on Friday. Dibrugarh and Tezpur recorded 37.2 and 36.9 degree Celsius respectively.
Relative humidity of Guwahati on Friday hovered between 67 to 72 per cent.
At Hojai, 21 students of Ajmal Women’s Arts College fell unconscious on Friday while their classes were going on due to scorching heat. They were admitted immediately to Hojai’s HAMM Hospital. According to the doctor their condition is stated to be stable now.
Hojai recorded 39 degree Celsius temperature on Friday. Moreover, load shedding throughout the day added woes to the problems of the denizens.
To get relief from this heat, people were seen taking sugarcane juice, iced-water, ice cream and coconut-water. Markets wear a deserted look during the day.
Electricity Department on Friday evening announced that due to some technical problems of Samaguri transformer there will be load shedding for 15-20 days. All the small scale factories have been asked to down their shutters from evening 5 to morning 6.
