Assam: Prime accused in Barpeta assault case arrested

Police have arrested the prime accused responsible for allegedly attacking a group of Muslim people in Barpeta district of Assam.

As per reports, the prime accused identified as Debojit Deka, was shooting a video of the tortured victims who were forced to shout slogans such as ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Pakistan Murdabad’.

Deka, a resident of Jalukbari area of Guwahati, later uploaded the video on social media.

The accused man was booked under Sections 295A, 120B, 153A and 325.

The 30-year-old man has been identified as a member of Sri Ram Sena, a right wing Hindu group headed by a Karnataka based man Pramod Muthalik.

The victims who were attacked were travelling by an auto rickshaw on Tuesday.

However, a group of rogues stopped the vehicle and asked them questions on their identities.

After getting to know that they were Muslim people, the rogues brutally attacked them and forced them to chant slogans.

The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) and the North East Minorities Students’ Union (NEMSU) on Thursday had separately filed complaints against the right-wing organization.
