Polling began in Jorhat district of Eastern Assam for the panchayat elections at 7 am on Wednesday.

Earlier, Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Narayan Konwar on Tuesday adjourned the polling for the Ward number 1 of 51 Gaon Panchayat under Baghchung Block here following the death of the BJP candidate for the ward.

The candidate Santanu Bordoloi died on Monday due to illness.

The administration is yet to decide on a new date of polling in the ward.

Konwar said that that voters of that particular ward would be able to vote for the three other posts that is of gaon panchayat president, AP member and ZPC member.

Significantly, in Ward number 2 of Hemlai Gaon Panchayat under East Jorhat Development Block at Selenghat, Sukur Moni Chatra,  the Congress candidate,  was declared winner by the Jorhat district administration a few days back.

A district administration official said that he has won the seat as nomination papers filed by other candidates were rejected due to errors.

Earlier on Tuesday, polling personnel, accompanied by security staff, left for their respective polling stations.

The number of voters under Jorhat election district is 351739.

Altogether 1593 candidates are in the fray in Jorhat election district for four categories for posts under 57 Gaon Panchayats, five Anchalik Panchayats, and 12 ZPC seats.

Under Titabar Election district, the total number of polling stations is 347.

Altogether 982 candidates are in the fray for four categories for posts under33 Gaon Panchayats, four Anchalik Panchayats and zeven ZPC seats in Titabar Sub-division.

The total number of voters in Titabar election district is 211424.
