An Assam police sub-inspector (SI) and a woman police constable were on Tuesday suspended for allegedly stripping and torturing three women inside a police station in Darrang district.
Dhula police outpost officer-in-charge Mahendra Sharma and woman constable Binita Gogoi allegedly stripped a pregnant woman and her two sisters and tortured them overnight at the police outpost on September 8.
Both SI Sharma and constable Gogoi were placed under suspension on Tuesday evening following media outrage.
Police have also registered a case (no 577/2019) against the SI and the woman constable at Sipajhar police station under the relevant sections of the IPC.
Taking serious note of the incident, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who holds the home department, has ordered a probe.
Central western range deputy inspector general (DIG) of Assam police, Brajenjit Sinha has been asked to conduct the inquiry.
Even though the three women had filed a complaint with the Darrang superintendent of police (SP) Amrit Bhuyan on September 10 alleging torture by SI Sharma and constable Gogoi, the SP allegedly did not initiate any action and covered up the entire incident.
It was only after the media outrage on Tuesday; SP Bhuyan at a hurriedly convened press conference at his office chamber in Mangladai said he had ordered an inquiry.
