Raj Gaur and Bobbita Gaur, residents of line number seven of Seleng tea estate near Mariani in Jorhat district were arrested on Monday on charges of killing their 10-year-old son, Abhijit.

Police said that Raj had severely beaten up Abhijit, a class IV student of Seleng Laojan LP School, with a stick for disobeying him and going out to swim with friends in the nearby Jhanji river on Saturday after returning from school. His mother had also hit him with slippers.

When the boy had collapsed and vomited blood, his friends and relatives had rushed him to the Amguri Community Health Centre, which on seeing his critical condition, had in turn referred him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

Abhijit breathed his last at 11 pm on Sunday night at JMCH.

The post-mortem conducted on Monday revealed injuries to liver, kidney and lungs following which the parents of the child were arrested.

Neighbors also alleged that his father did not like the child going to school but wanted to engage him in some other works.
