Assam minister Keshab Mahanta surveys Barak valley flood

The flood situation in Barak valley of Assam continues to remain grim on Sunday with both the Barak and Kushiyara rivers flowing above the danger level.

Assam Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta is on a visit to the Barak valley on Sunday to assess the situation.

Immediately arriving at Silchar early Sunday morning, Mahanta visited the flood affected areas.

He was accompanied by local legislators Dilip Kumar Paul, Kishore Nath, Aminul Haque Laskar, Amarchand Jain, Anowar Laskar and chief engineer of the Water Resources department B Rongpi, officer on special duty Dibakar Bhattacharya, executive engineer Achit Deb.

Local Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leaders are also accompanying the minister.

The minister surveyed the embankments at Shivbari of Tarapur in Silchar, Borkhola, Katigora, Badarpur, Hailakndi and Karimganj.

The Minister directed the concerned officials to repair the breached embankments on war-footing.

Apart from surveying the flood and breached embankments, the minister also visited the relief camps and interacted with the inmates taking refuge in the camps.

The minister also directed the concerned officials to ensure that sufficient food and other relief materials are provided to the inmates of the relief camps.

Notably, six people have lost their lives in the first spade of floods this year in Barak valley.

Apart from the Barak river, other tributaries like Madhura, Sonai, Dhaleswari, Siri, Jiri, Jatinga and Katakhal are also flowing above danger level further aggravating the flood situation in the Barak valley.

The water level has reached 1983 metre at the Annapurna ghat in Silchar and the water is flowing above danger level till Sunday noon.
