More than 500 mid-day meal workers of education department from across Dhubri district of Assam under the banner of Dhubri district unit of All Assam Mid-Day Meal Workers Union assembled at Tetultala of Dhubri town on Monday and took out a protest rally which ended in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Dhubri and later they also staged a protest demonstration.
They were carrying banners and placards highlighting their demands.
A large number of women workers cooking mid day meals in various government schools joined the protest. They shouted slogans against the government and also in support of their demands.
Several senior members of the Association also addressed the gathering and urged upon the government to fulfill their basic pending demands of Mid Day Meal Worker’s Union.
The Union has also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri.
The memorandum signed jointly by Aklima Khatun and Raj Lakhi Pradhani, president and secretary respectively of the Dhubri district unit of All Assam Mid-day Meal Union.
Through his memorandum, the Union has alleged that these workers are performing their duty in different government schools for the last couple of years.
But still they are paid just Rs 1000 per month which is a cruel joke with them. They are struggling since long but the government and the authorities concerned have failed to take a decision about their wages.
Even the Union Government in 2013 during the 85 annual conference had given an assurance to hike the minimum wages to Rs 2000 per month from Rs 1000 but they are still getting Rs 1000 per month.
The Union sought immediate intervention of the Prime Minister into the long pending demands of the Mid-Day Meal Union in the greater interest of the poor families.
