The couple has been identified as 30-year-old Ratan Kalita from Bagulimari and his wife Barasha Das.

“Poverty might be a cause behind the couple taking such an extreme step,” said locals.

According to information, Ratan Kalita, who belongs to an economically weak family at Bagulimari, married Barasha Das from Natun Bazar, a nearby village, two years back.

Ratan’s father earns livelihood by working as a labourer and pulling cart.

“They had been living a normal life after their marriage. There was no conflict,” informed Ratan’s brother.

But the villagers were shocked after witnessing the bodies of the couple hanging in a tree on Monday.

The family members of Ratan Kalita informed that Barasha was treated as a ‘daughter’ rather than a bride in their family.

“Ratan wanted to leave home and get himself engaged in a private company. He did not want to take his wife Barasha along with him. But Barasha too wanted to accompany him. Accordingly, both of them went out of the home last night. But today found their lifeless bodies,” informed Ratan’s father.

The police in presence of a district magistrate on Monday sent the bodies of the couple for conducting post-mortem.

Although police have suspected it to be a case of suicide, they are investigating into the case to unearth more details about the cause of their death.
