Assam: Major breakthrough for police; five prime accused in Nagaon gang rape nabbed

In a major breakthrough, a sizeable team of Assam Police on Monday nabbed five of the prime accused of the sensational gang rape that took place at Amoni in Nagaon district of Assam two days back.

The police team acting on a tip off apprehended three of the prime suspects from Dolabari area of Tezpur along with a Maruti Swift Dzire vehicle while the two were nabbed from Amoni.

According to information, a massive team of police personnel from Samaguri and Nagaon in association with Tezpur Police launched an operation in the Dolabari area of Tezpur after getting specific information at around 8:30 am on Monday morning.

The police team intercepted the Swift Dzire bearing registration no AS-01-BN-6994 at Dolabari in Tezpur and apprehended the three accused in the heinous crime.

The mobile phone of the rape victim was also seized from their possession.

The police also simultaneously managed to nab the other two suspects of the crime from Amoni in Nagaon.

The arrested persons have been identified as Habiz Bhuyan hailing from Sialkhaiti at Amoni; Moinul Hussain from Napam area of Tezpur; Safikul Islam from Napam Pukhuri basti in Tezpur; and Ramzan Ali and Rockybul Islam hailing form Bakul Jaroni area of Tezpur.

It may be recalled that a woman in her twenties was allegedly abducted and gang raped in Assam’s Nagaon district on August 29, following which she was dumped on the National Highway 37.

On August 30, the police launched an operation and nabbed the biker Rajesh Dhar from Hojai with whom the victim was travelling from Lanka, where she was working at a roadside dhaba towards Golaghat when the incident took place.

Later, Dhar was produced before the court and had been remanded to police custody since Tuesday.

It was on the confession made by Dhar that the police managed to nab the other five culprits involved in the gang rape.

Meanwhile, Samaguri Police have been intensively grilling the arrested persons.

The police have also intensified hunt for the other two culprits who are still on the run.
