Two police personnel had also received injuries.

Singh said that due to the bandh on Monday, the manager told the workers that they would get payment the next day.

“The workers accepted this in the morning but by evening they had got drunk and assaulted the manager. They also had other grievances and complained against the high handed behaviour of the manager,” the SP said.

He further said that the workers got angry because the next day there was a local weekly market and the workers usually buy produce from this market.

But without the wages this would mean empty larders.

The workers were armed with sticks, daos and also pelted stones and the manager had received injuries on the back and head but was not critical.

He had been taken to Guwahati for better treatment.

A source said that had the police not arrived on time the incident might have taken a turn for the worse.

The Bahipookri tea estate is under the Dhunseri Tea company.
