The 24+ organizations of Karbi Anglong district of Assam threatened to call a bandh on January 8 next, the day of voting for Town Committee election in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong district.

The 24+ is a conglomeration of social organizations demanding separate electoral roll for Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) election.

In a press conference convened at the office of District Press Club of Karbi Anglong at Diphu, convenor of 24+, Ratan Terang said, “We demand that the Town Committee elections should be withdrawn until new rules are framed and electoral rolls are prepared for KAAC election. Failing to do so by KAAC authority, the 24+ will be bound to call a 12-hour Karbi Anglong bandh on January 8 next year on the polling day of Town Committee election.

It is very unfortunate that CEM, Tuliram Ronghang led KAAC has exceeded the time frame of six months as per the order of Guahati High Court to frame new rules of KAAC under Paragraph 2 (7) and Paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule of the constitution.

The Court on July 13 last has directed KAAC to frame new rules and acts as the existing Assam Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951 has become obsolete.

The six months time will expire on January 13, 2019. The organizations alleged that by not framing new rules it is not only dishonouring KAAC, but also disobeying the High Court order.
