The Rotary Club of Haflong Hills celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 last by felicitating four women achievers of Haflong. Of the four feted, Thangi Darnei was felicitated as the first woman employee of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC). Jayshree Khersa – who was bestowed the title ‘Iconic Woman of Substance’ – was feted for her exemplary work as a UN peacekeeper in strife-torn Kosovo in southeastern Europe.
Lily Lalremkini Darnei, a fashionista, was given the title ‘Iconic Style Diva’ and Nibila Jidung was honoured for her pioneering work in the field of organic farming. These four women of grit delivered speeches on women empowerment before the gathering on the evening of March 8 last and Renu Mahajan spoke about women empowerment in India.

A presentation was also made on the subject – ‘Sensitisation of Women’s Rights Protection Laws in India’. Deputy Commisioner (DC) of Dima Hasao Amitabh Rajkhowa graced the occasion as the chief guest and the event was also graced by the presence of representatives from several women organisations of Haflong.
The event was organised by the women empowerment cell of Rotary Club of Haflong Hills and was chaired by Rotarian Purabi Phonglo who informed the gathering that this was the first chapter of the annual invited lecture on ‘Women: Security, Conflict Management and Peace’.
