Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi will discharge the functions of the Governor of Manipur during the absence on leave of Dr Najma A Heptulla.
A communique made with Raj Bhavan, Assam from Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on April 27, where in it has been stated that the President of India by Articles 155 and 160 of the Constitution of India, appointed Prof Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam to discharge the functions of the Governor of Manipur with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office, during the absence on leave of Dr Najma A Heptulla.

Prof Mukhi is taking charge on Wednesday as Governor of Manipur at Imphal.
Dr Heptullah is going on leave from Wednesday and during her leave of absence Assam Governor Prof Mukhi will officiate as Manipur Governor.
Dr Heptulla is leaving for the United States to attend her grandson’s graduation.

Prof Mukhi will be the sixth Governor of Manipur since May 2014, when NDA came to power.
It may be mentioned that Prof Jagdish Mukhi, a veteran leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former MLA from Janak Puri Assembly constituency in Delhi was sworn in as Governor of Assam on October 10, 2017.
In his previous assignment, Mukhi served as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
He succeeded Banwarilal Purohit who has been appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Seventy five year old Mukhi had also served as Minister of Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation and Higher Education in the Delhi government.
He is credited with working extensively for the welfare of citizens of Delhi apart from holding the charge of opposition leader in Delhi assembly during 1998-2008.
He had been awarded the Best Finance and Planning Minister by the then Planning Minister Pranab Mukherjee in 1997 & Awarded as Best MLA by the then Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi in 2002.
On the other hand Governor Dr Najma Heptulla who is the the longest serving Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha since 1985, was sworn in as Governor of Manipur on August 21, 2016.
