The office of the joint director of health services, Goalpara in Assam on Saturday arranged a one-day training on mental health problems for college teachers under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP).
Dr Upamoy Nath, psychiatrist cum district programme manager and Dr Hrishikesh Kalita, psychiatrist imparted training on signs and symptoms of different mental problems – neurosis and psychosis.

On the other hand, Purnima Pegu, clinical psychologist, discussed about the mental health problems among the college students and the role of the teachers to provide service in this sector.
Plabita Saikia, social worker and Khurseeda Ahmed, case manager, acted and spoke on relaxation therapy.
Dr Nilmadhav Das, joint director of health services, distributed the certificates to the participants and requested to bring an awareness in the concerned institutions.

Besides the other colleges, teachers from Goalpara College, Goalpara Girls College, KCM Academy and Pub Goalpara College teachers took part in the programme.
It was identified that approximately six per cent of general population suffer from neuropsychological problem requiring medical care.
An analysis has indicated that the incidents will increase to 15 per cent by 2020. This population is scattered all over the State and the health care services must reach to the grassroots to cover this population.
Eight districts of the State are already covered under the NMHP scheme, namely Nagaon, Goalpara, Tinsukia, Darang, Nalbari, Morigaon, Karbi Along and Karimganj.
All the MHP centers are located in the district civil hospitals.
