A team from the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau of Assam arrested a forest beat officer from the campus of Divisional Forest Office of North Kamrup Division, Rangia of Kamrup district while accepting bribe on Monday evening.

The forest beat officer, identified as Dhiraj Das, was caught red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 9,000 from a truck driver inside the campus of the Divisional Forest Office in Rangia.

The truck driver has been identified as Lakhi Das of Tamulpur in Baksa district.

According to the truck driver, the accused has demanded Rs 3000 per month from each of the three dumper vehicles carrying sand and other materials through his area.

The forest beat officer allegedly threatened that he would charge Rs one Lakh per vehicle from the complainant if he did not settle for the monthly arrangements and if his vehicles were caught during any checking.

The complainant approached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Assam and a trap was laid down as per standard procedure in matter if ACB PS Case No 21/2018 u/s 7(a)/13(1)(b)/13(2) of PC Act (as amended in 2018).

The arrested officer will be forwarded to the special court on Tuesday.
