In another major accident in Assam, three people were killed while three others sustained grievous injuries in Golaghat district in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The accident took place near a place called Morangi near Numaligarh in the district along National Highway 39.
The dead include an excise inspector.
The accident took place when the Tata Sumo in which the excise officials were travelling collided head on with a dumper.
A six-member team of the Excise Intelligence Bureau was travelling towards Jorhat on a special operation.
The Tata Sumo bearing registration number As-01-DJ-0801 collided head on with a dumper bearing registration number NL-05-G-1049 coming from the opposite direction.
The impact was so horrific that the Sumo caught fire and turned into ashes.
The excise inspector Sumu Maibongsa and another of his team Ramen Bonjang were burnt alive inside the vehicle.
Another official of the excise department Harekrishna Kumar died at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.
The critically injured three officials have been identified as Sundar Bari, Tanu Injal and Zahidul Haque.
All the three injured are presently undergoing treatment at the Golaghat civil hospital.
The condition of all the three injured have been stated to be critical.
Meanwhile, the driver and the handyman of the dumper fled from the spot immediately after the accident.
Mystery shrouds the nature of the accident involving intelligence officers of the excise department in the middle of the night.
Assam excise minister Parimal Suklabaidya has expressed deep shock at the tragic incident.
He asked the department to stand by the family members of the deceased.
He also said the expense of the treatment of those injured will be borne by the State Government.
The minister also had a discussion with the top officials of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital regarding providing the best treatment to the injured.
He also directed Kamrup excise inspector to over the entire exercise.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed Upper Assam divisional commissioner Jurie Sonowal to probe the whole matter.
On the other hand, additional excise commissioner Sanjiv Medhi will lead a team to pay their last respect to Sumu Maibongsa at the funeral to be conducted at Diphu.
