As part of their fight against growing alcoholism among local youths, a group of women launched an anti-liquor  drive and attacked liquor shops which had been running illegal liquor  business at Chakkarline area in Ward No 10 of Dhubri town, police said on Saturday.

Rabindra Berman, Sub-Inspector of Dhubri Police, who arrived on the spot with security forces said that during their protest, the women also seized over 6000 litres of illegal stock of country liquor and destroyed those in presence of the police.

The women staged protest in front of the houses of the sellers of country-made liquors who had been selling illicit liquors since long and also vandalised few houses of alleged liquor sellers before the police reached the area and controlled them.

“We have drawn the attention of the authorities concerned including police and sought closure of the illegal trade of country liquor here. However, the officials did not take note of our grievances,” said an agitating woman of the group.

Wadiur Rahman, Ward Commissioner, also reached the locality and assured of extending support towards the cause taken up by the women.

“Alcoholism was taking a toll on many families. A good number of men spend all their earnings on liquor. After drinking, they subject their family members to atrocities,” said the women.

“And despite it the local police and the department concerned have turned a blind eye into the matter,” they added.

The women also said that their drive would continue in the next coming days too and they would themselves demolish illegal liquor dens in case the police fail to take timely action against the culprits.
