Yet again, a businessman was elected as the president of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA).

Businessman Ramen Dutta, who is known to be close to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, was on Saturday elected as the ACA chief while former Advocate General Debojit Saikia was elected as the secretary of the State’s apex body for cricket uncontested.

Saikia is known for his closeness with Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It may be mentioned here that former secretary Pradip Buragohain contested against Ramen Dutta, who was the former vice-president of the cricket body.

Among the 33 affiliated units of the Assam Cricket Association, this time 30 were eligible to attend the Annual General Meeting and cast votes.

The names of representatives for other three units – Karimganj, Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University – were rejected because of different reasons.

It may be mentioned that three candidates – Kamakhya Saikia and Saibal Sengupta have also been elected uncontested for the posts of joint secretary and member of the apex council respectively.

Different sections of the State earlier expressed their grievances as none of the former cricketers of the State, who had played at national levels in the past, were ever elected to the cricket body.
