Guwahati: Veteran Assam Congress leader Hemaprabha Saikia, in a letter addressed to the Congress president Rahul Gandhi, resigned from the highest policy-making body of the INC, the Steering Committee.
In the letter she said, she wanted to make way for the younger leaders. She however said that she will continue serving the party.
Hemaprabha Saikia is the wife of Late Hiteswar Saikia, Ex-CM of Assam. Her son Debabrata Saikia is a Congress MLA from Nazira Constituency in Upper Assam and also the opposition leader of the Assam Assembly at the present.
She served as the Minister of Handloom and Textiles in the Government of Assam from 2001 to 2006.
Saikia also served as an MLA for Nazira from 1996 to 2006 and led the Assam Tourism Development Corporation as chairperson.
