Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said that adequate awareness of the sports persons regarding evil effects of performance enhancing substances would lead to creating deterrence against the use such substances.
Speaking at an awareness workshop organized by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) in association with Dibrugarh District Administration, State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare, District Sports Association, Dibrugarh and Oil India Limited at the District Library Auditorium in Dibrugarh, Sonowal said that awareness towards the protocol of Anti-Doping Agency will help the athletes to discourage the use of performance enhancing drugs and excel in the national and international sports events.
Chief minister Sonowal said that adequate awareness should be generated among sporting talents to know about the banned substances and keep themselves aloof from such substances. He also said that if the sports talents of the State are given right kind of training, the foundation of sports in the state can be made stronger. Sonowal also said that sports is a discipline which involves a lot of values.
By inculcating devotion, dedication and diligence the sports persons need to proceed towards excellence. Referring to ace boxer Mary Kom, Sonowal said that she is an epitome and represents the sports fraternity and shows that with devotion and dedication, sports persons can reach the zenith of success.
Sonowal said that sports persons have great role to play in nation building. Therefore, the State government has adopted several steps for a systemic development of sports in the state. He also said that decision of the State government to establish Sports University at Chabua would lead to creating more sports talents who will be disciplined and who can take the responsibility in leading the state in the field of sports.
He also asked the sports persons in the State to aware themselves and stay away from the use of prohibited substances.
The programme where in Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Pallab Gopal Jha delivered welcome address was also attended among others by MLAs Prasanta Phukan, Vinod Hazarika, chief executive member of Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council Dipu Ranjan Makrari, member secretary, State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare Lakhya Konwar, footballer of Indian Football Team Bineet Rai, Assam Gas Company Ltd vice chairman Indra Gogoi, vice chairman Assam State Housing Board Subhash Dutta, coordinator NADA North Eastern Region Dr Meenakshi Saikia.
