Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will land in New Delhi on Thursday to meet top party leaders in view of the controversy over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
As the issue has raised a hue and cry across Assam, according to the source close to the CM, Sonowal will brief party President Amit Shah and other party leaders about the present situation in Assam that erupted following the citizenship issue.
Last week, Chief Minister Sonowal called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Joint Parliamentary Party (JPC) Chairman Rajendra Agrawal and briefed them about the ground situation.
If insiders in State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are to be believed, Sonowal will put an overall picture before the party leaderships involving Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
On Tuesday, as many as 16 indigenous organisations from Assam openly decried the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and demanded its withdrawal.
Sonowal is also likely to meet several other leaders as well as Union Ministers during his stay in New Delhi.
“We have cleared our position before the JPC. At any costs we will not accept the Bill…if they pass the Bill, Government both at the Centre and State has to face the consequences,” said Aditya Khaklari, president of the All Assam Tribal Sangha, in Delhi recently.
Leaders of 16 indigenous organisations from Assam had a marathon meeting in Delhi with chairman and members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) set up to look after the issue.
