The court of the District & Sessions Judge, Hailakandi, in a landmark judgment on Thursday, sentenced Jasimuddin Barbhuiya – who raped and murdered a 13-year-old girl on March 14 this year – to death.

The incident of rape and murder, which stunned Hailakandi and the whole of Assam, still makes everyone cringe.

The accused, Jasimuddin, has been sentenced to death under Section 302 for committing murder and 10 years of imprisonment along with a penalty of Rs 10,000 under Section 376 on rape charges.

The court of District & Sessions Judge, Hailakandi, Debadish Bhattacharjee on October 1, 2018, during the hearing of the case had announced that all the charges against Jasimuddin Barbhuiya have been proven and the court pronounced him guilty of rape and murder of a minor.

But, the Judge did not pronounce the sentence and fixed Thursday (October 4, 2018) for final hearing.

On Thursday, after the final hearing, the Judge in a landmark judgement sentenced the accused to death for rape and murder of the minor.

The 13-year-old minor girl was a resident of Bethcherra area located in Hailakandi-Mizoram inter-State border under Ramnathpur Police Station of Assam.

On March 14, 2018, Jasimuddin Barbhuiya barged into her residence.

First, he raped her and then murdered her with a dao. After that he tried to destroy evidence and ran away.

But the family members of the victim saw him.

The victim’s uncle lodged an FIR in Ramnathpur Police Station and the case was registered.

On June 11, 2018, the chargesheet was filed.

Statements of 21 people were heard from the witness box and were recorded.

After hearing police officials, doctors, bureaucrats, forensic officers, panchayat members, friends, and relatives, the court finally pronounced its verdict.

Public Prosecutor Ujjal Kumar Das represented the victim’s family while advocate Nurul Haq Mazumdar represented the accused, Jasimuddin Barbhuiya.
