Assam bypolls Meghalaya: NPP leader says party in power wins by-poll

Guwahati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday announced the date for the byelection in Assam.

Byelection for the five Assembly constituencies – Behali, Bongaigaon, Dholai, Samaguri and Sidli – will take place on November 13, 2024.

Bypolls were necessitated in these Assembly constituencies after the respective legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha, elections for which were held between April 19 and May 7 this year.

Last dates for filing of nomination and withdrawal of candidature are October 25 and October 30, respectively.  

The counting of votes will be held on November 23.

Two MLAs from BJP, Parimal Suklabaidya and Ranjit Dutta, won in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

While Suklabaidya, who represented the Dholai Assembly seat, won from Silchar Lok Sabha constituency and Dutta, representing Behali, won from Sonitpur.

On the other hand, two MLAs from BJP’s alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won in the 2024 LS polls.

AGP’s Phani Bhushan Choudhury, representing Bongaigaon Assembly constituency, won the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat, and Joyanta Basumatary, representing Sidli, won the Kokrajhar LS seat.

Congress MLA from Samaguri Rakibul Hussain won from the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency with a huge margin.
