Guwahati: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) has approved two key policy decisions aimed at strengthening the rural economy and resolving long-pending land tenure issues across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

After an Executive Council meeting held at the BTC headquarters in Kokrajhar on June 4, BTC Executive Member Maheswar Basumatary informed reporters that the council has cleared plans to revitalise traditional cattle markets while also setting up new trading hubs across the region.

According to him, the initiative is designed to improve livestock trade networks and provide a structured platform for farmers, cattle rearers and small traders. Officials believe the move will help expand income opportunities in rural areas and bring greater organisation to the existing informal market system.

In a separate decision, the council also gave its approval for the distribution of land pattas to eligible landless residents living in both rural and urban parts of the BTR. The proposal is intended to address longstanding concerns over land ownership and documentation.

Basumatary noted that the land allocation drive aligns with earlier commitments made by the Bodoland Peopleโ€™s Front (BPF) and is expected to benefit a significant number of families who currently lack legal ownership rights over the land they occupy.

Further guidelines on implementation, eligibility norms, and rollout timelines are likely to be issued in the coming days, officials said.

Both decisions are being seen as important administrative steps with potential to boost local livelihoods while also strengthening social security frameworks across the region.
