Assam boxers Shiva, Jamuna & Manipur’s Mary Kom, Sarita win gold

Four boxers from the Northeast have brought laurels to the region by winning gold medals in the 2nd Open India Boxing Tournament held at Guwahati on Friday.

The four boxers, who won the finals in the tournament, are Assam’s Shiva Thapa and Jamuna Boro, and Manipur’s M.C. Mary Kom and Sarita Devi.

Shiva Thapa, the bronze medalist in 2018, defeated his opponent Manish Kaushik by 5-0 in the 60 kg final.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) on its Twitter handle stated: “Assam’s own @shivathapa gives a powerpacked display amidst an electric home crowd; topples the defending champion #ManishKaushik in a unanimous 5:0 verdict to claim the crown in the 60kg category. Kudos on the win!”

Another boxer from Assam, Jamuna Boro toppled fellow boxer Y. Sandhyarani in the finals of 54 kg category.

The BFI on its Twitter handle stated: “Assam’s Jamuna wins!

“Local girl #JamunaBoro rode on vociferous cheers of support to topple fellow ?? Y.Sandhyarani in the finals; displays strong aggression to take home the gold in the 54kg category with a unanimous 5:0 win.”

On the other hand, sixth time world champion Mary Kom also won gold medal at the 2nd India Open Boxing Championship by defeating Vanlal Duati in a unanimous 5:0 verdict in the 51st kg category.

“The 6time WC @MangteC punches her way to the medal; gives a flawless display to breeze past #VanlalDuati in a unanimous 5:0 verdict and win her 2nd #IndiaOpenBoxing gold.

“Kudos Mary!”

Sarita Devi won gold medal after defeating Simranjit.

The BFI on its official Twitter handle stated: “#SaritaDevi, who won her first in 3 years after beating @ Simranjit boxer in the summit clash, dedicated the medal to her mother whom she lost to cancer last year.

“We are proud of you, champ!”

The concluding day event of the tournament was attended by Assam chief minister Sarbananada Sonowal.

2nd India Open Organising chairperson Lakhya Konwar felicitated Assam chief minister Sonowal and BFI president Ajay Singh on the sidelines of the grand finale at the Karambir NabinChandra Bordoloi stadium in Guwahati.
