The All India United Democratic Front chief Badruddin Ajmal on Wednesday asked Bharatiya Janata Party national president Amit Shah to clarify whether the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam is being updated under the Supreme Court of India’s supervision or the BJP’s direction.
Ajmal stated this through a press communiqué issued to media houses on Wednesday.
Ajmal, who is also the Dhubri Lok Sabha MP, said, “We thought that the Supreme Court of India has been monitoring the whole NRC updating process. So, we were silent though we suspected BJP’s conspiracy behind missing of over 40 lakh people in the final draft NRC. But, Shah’s statement in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday proved that the BJP interfered the whole NRC update process which led missing of more than 40 lakh people in the final draft of the NRC.”
“Suspecting non-inclusion of many Indians’ names in the draft NRC, we called on the Home Minister of India, Register General of India, State Co-ordinator for NRC and Assam Chief Minister before publication of the final draft of the NRC and we informed about our concerns,” Ajmal stated.
“The BJP-led Government and the concerned authorities had assured us not to worry as the Supreme Court had been monitoring the whole NRC update process. But Shah’s statement dismissed the assurance of the Government on Tuesday,” Ajmal said.
Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha had said: “NRC is being conducted on SC (Supreme Court) order. There are 40 lakh people (missing in the list)… Whom do you want to save? You want to save illegal Bangladeshis… this was the Congress PM’s initiative. He (Rajiv Gandhi) did not have the courage. We have courage and we are doing it.”
