A day-long training programme on ‘scientific goat production and management’ was organised on Tuesday by department of Livestock Production and Management, Assam Agricultural University (AAU) at Joyhing in North Lakhimpur as part of the year-long golden jubilee celebration of the University.

The day-long training programme was conducted in collaboration with All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRP) on goat improvement, AAU, Burnihat.

A total of 50 progressive farmers participated in the training programme from different parts of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district of Assam.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr U R Tamuli, Associate Dean, Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, AAU, who emphasised the importance of goats as ATM (Any time Money) source, since goat farming is now-a-days considered as a lucrative income opportunity not only in the rural areas but amongst the urban unemployed youth too.

Dr S M Rahman, the main architect of the training programme, in his welcome speech thanked AICRP on goat improvement, AAU, Burnihat and Indo Global Social Service Society (IGSSS), Lakhimpur for their kind support in organizing the training programme.

Dr Abdus Saleque, chief scientist, Goat Research Station (GRS), Burnihat and Dr N Nahardeka, Principal Investigator, AICRP on Goat Improvement, AAU, Burnihat acted as resource persons for the training programme.

They spoke in length about the various scientific management, health and genetic upgradation issues of goat farming.

An interactive session was also conducted between the farmers and the scientists, where the farmers asked various queries related to goat farming.

The entire programme was hosted by Dr Kandarpa Boruah, and at the valedictory function the certificates of participation was distributed amongst the farmers.
