The leadership of regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) may rethink on its ties with the saffron party provided the BJP-led government withdraws the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
This was disclosed by the AGP president Atul Bora and Executive President, Keshab Mahanta before the media following a meeting with the party workers in Golaghat, five days after it had snapped ties with the BJP,
The AGP leaders stated that the party was keeping a tab on the steps taken by the BJP government regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. “If the BJP government scrapes the Bill, then it will be discussed in the party forum to take a decision on ties with the BJP in future,” the AGP leaders said.
The AGP leadership snapped ties with the BJP and walked out of the alliance with the latter after the Union Cabinet approved the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 on January 7. The Bill was passed by Lok Sabha on January 8.
The AGP president, Atul Bora today called upon all sections of people of Assam to intensify the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that was going to put the identity of indigenous Assamese people at stake.
The he vowed to take the movement against the Bill to the grass root level workers of the party as the BJP-led government in the Centre seemed determined to get the Bill passed in Rajya Sabha during the budget session of the Parliament that begins on January 31 next.
