Kunki Chowdhury’s Sujata Gurung mother seeks Re 1 defamation suit and apology from Assam CM over “beef eater” remark.

Guwahati: On May 12, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, the mother of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury, announced that she would bring a Re 1 defamation lawsuit against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma due to what, she called “false allegations” made against her during the Assembly election campaign.

In her statement, she said she was labelled with terms such as “beef eater” “non-Sanatani,” and “anti-India communist” without any personal knowledge of her life, beliefs or background. She claimed the remarks were made as part of political campaigning and narrative building.

Chowdhury alleged that a photograph circulated in this context was misrepresented and clarified by the management of a museum in Denver, where it was reportedly taken. She further said that the circulation of such claims and images had led to public defamation and caused concern for her family’s safety, including her minor children.

She also objected to being labelled “anti-India,” stating that sharing or retweeting articles does not amount to such an ideology. She added that she is an avid reader with a personal library of over 5,000 books covering diverse subjects and perspectives.

Referring to ideological labels, she said her views have evolved over time and rejected the political tagging attached to her earlier writings.

She also noted that any defamation suit against the Chief Minister would be filed for a nominal amount of Rs. 1.00/- (Rupee one only) along with a demand for a public apology.
