Guwahati: At least 200 people fell ill from food poisoning after consuming snacks served at a memorial ceremony in Golaghat district of Assam on Saturday night.

The incident took place during the ceremony at one Pradip Gogoi’s house in Sarupathar’s Uriamghat.

The guests, reportedly served with traditional snacks, soon complained of headache, vomiting and pain in stomach followed by loose motion.  

As many as 55 people had to be immediately rushed to the Sarupathar community health centre (CHC) and Uriamghat model hospital.

Two of the patients were later shifted to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for better treatment.

The condition of the victims has now been stated to be stable with some of them being discharged after treatment.  

The others with minor symptoms are recovering at their homes.  

Local MLA Biswajit Phukan, who visited the hospital, said the Golaghat district administration has informed him that a food inspector will visit the house to investigate the cause of the food poisoning.  

He said a medical camp has been set up and the health condition of those affected is being monitored.

Moreover, medical teams have also been sent to the houses of the victims in order to monitor their health conditions.
