Sixteen hundred participants joined the Dibrugarh Marathon on Sunday to promote health awareness among citizens of Dibrugarh.
The fifth edition of the Dibrugarh Marathon was organised by Marwari Yuva Manch Dibrugarh Greater branch.
The theme of this year was ‘Run for Yourself’ – Aap Badlo Desh Badlega.
The event was flagged off from Old Government Boys’ High School field at 6.45 am by the Commandant of CRPF 171 Battalion, Pradymman Singh.
In the Half Marathon (21.1 km) for male, runner Sohon Koay stood first.
In the Half Marathon (21.1 km) for female, Nodiya Pator received the first prize.
In the 11 km, Sunil Sen and Pinki Majhi stood first while in 7 km, Debojit Khalkho and Shakuntala Doley received the first prize.
In 4 km, Pandu Murmu and Radha Majhi stood first.
The Dibrugarh Marathon was held in four categories – 4 km for 10 years and above, 7 km for 14 years and above, 11 km for 14 years and above and Half Marathon (21.1 km) for 16 years and above.
Mayank Poddar, president of the Marwari Yuva Manch Greater branch said, “We are happy that a large number of participants joined the event.”
“In the coming years, we hope that the Dibrugarh Marathon will become a big sporting event in Upper Assam,” he added.
Poddar said their main objective is to promote health awareness among the citizens of Dibrugarh.
“Senior citizens and youngsters participated in the event in large number. We are happy to see people from all walks of life gathering here to participate in the event,” added Poddar.
“We loved to participate in the event. I stood first in the 11 km category. Last year also, I participated in the event,” said Pinki Mani, a participant.
Poddar said they started the Dibrugarh Marathon four years back and the event has got overwhelming response in Upper Assam.
Last year 2,000 participants joined the event.
“Our main vision is to make the people aware about the health,” Poddar added.
Dibrugarh Marathon convenors Arvind Garodia and Srikant Sikatia thanked the Dibrugarh district administration for their full cooperation in the event.
