Top-seeded women’s doubles pair of Taring Yania and Pinky Karki of Arunachal Pradesh won gold in the Yonex Sunrise North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships-2018, the finals of which were played at Dimapur in Nagaland on Saturday.

Yania and Pinky defeated the third-seeded pair of M Somibala Devi and N Purnima Devi of Manipur in straight sets of 21-13 and 21-9 in the finals to win gold for Arunachal Pradesh and retain their women’s doubles crown for the second consecutive year.

The duo had won the title last year in Mizoram.

The other medal for Arunachal Pradesh in the Championships came in the mixed doubles category as the third-seeded pair of Taniya Yasap and Rahul Tamang was up against number one seeded pair of Anjan Burgohai and Manali Bora from Assam in the mixed double finals.

Though Yasap and Rahul put up a tough fight in the match, they, however, had to settle for silver after losing the game in straight sets of 21-14 and 21-13.

Meanwhile, the junior team of the State won bronze in the team event.

Arunachal State Badminton Association secretary Bamang Tago and joint secretary Penya Bagra have congratulated the medal winners and participants for a successful tournament. The duo also congratulated team manager Nich Bapu and Coach Gita Karki for their supervision and efforts.

The Yonex Sunrise North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships is a Badminton Association of India calendar event. The champions of the zonal competition would compete in the national level.

The four-day-long championship was organized by the Dimapur District Badminton Association under the aegis of Nagaland Badminton Association (NBA).

In all, 20 players from Arunachal participated in the competition which started on October 10 last.
