Arunachal Pradesh chief secretary Naresh Kumar on Tuesday said the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP) being constructed by the NHPC Ltd in river Subansiri, once fully commissioned, would make it the biggest HEP in the country.
“Once fully commissioned, the Lower Subansiri HEP will have the capacity to generate 2000 MW of power. The project is making good progress and at least 2 out of the HEP’s total 8 units are targeted to be commissioned by August 2022,” Kumar said.

The chief secretary was briefing Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra on the progress of several ongoing developmental projects in the state, at Raj Bhawan here.
Kumar said Arunachal has the potential to produce fifty percent of country’s hydroelectricity requirements.
“Besides, the Subansiri Lower HEP, the 4-unit Kameng HEP which has the capacity to generate 600 MW power will also be commissioned by the end of this year and with that, the state will get a share of 78 MW of power,” Kumar informed.

The chief secretary said memorandums of understanding (MoU) for establishing several other hydropower plants of different capacities have also been signed with various agencies and that the work on the same are in the pipeline including that of a proposed mega project on the Siang River.
“There has, however, been a delay in the launch of these projects due to some hurdles and they need to be looked into,” he said.
Briefing the governor on the telecommunications front, Kumar said a total of 722 V-Sat terminals under the Bharat Broadband Network have been allotted to the state out of which 182 have so far been installed at various remote locations in the last 10 to 11 months.
The chief secretary further apprised the governor that the state government is planning to establish one cluster farming unit in each assembly constituency of the state for which 3000 hectares of land has also been identified.
Kumar also informed the governor that the state government has approached the Centre for the establishment of a girl’s Sainik School in the state and the proposal has been well received by the Sainik Schools Society in Delhi.
“A Central team recently visited and inspected the proposed site of the school at Tawang and the state government is hopeful that the proposal shall get through,” Kumar said.
The Governor advised the chief secretary to also take up projects to uplift and promote the handloom and handicrafts of the state which according to him has been receiving low attention despite its high potential in various metropolitan cities.
