In a first, Arunachal Pradesh government has taken steps to create a Red Listing of orchids at the state level.

Quite a few orchid varieties are available in the eastern most state of the country.

For this purpose, the State government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

As per the MoU, the State government will collaborate with the IUCN to prepare the IUCN’s Red List Assessment for all orchids in the State.

The MoU was signed between the principal chief conservator of forest (PCCF) and head of forest forces (HoFF), Manmohan Singh Negi and Country Representative, IUCN India, Dr Vivek Saxena at the PCCF Office, here.

The environment and forest department is the nodal department for execution of the project.

The IUCN Red List is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity.

A powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and policy change, it is critical in protecting the natural resources.

This project is spread across 12 months, wherein training workshops for Red List Assessment will be conducted by experts from IUCN Red List Unit and Species Programme Headquaters, Gland in Switzerland.
