The vehicular traffic in Pangin town and its adjoining areas of Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh was affected on Thursday due to ‘chakka bandh’ with no vehicles plying across the bandh affected area.

The 12-hour-long dawn-to-dusk bandh was called due to apprehension of shifting the site for establishing district headquarters of Siang district from Nyobo (Perang Lampang) near present Pangin town to some other place.

However, no untoward incident has been reported till filing of this report and commercial vehicles both private and public vehicles were off the main road connecting Pangin circle. As per reports, police, magistrate and fire brigade vehicles were put on alert for any kind of eventuality.

The Siang Deputy Commissioner Rahul Singh reportedly said offices and educational institutions functioned normally while markets were kept open, with a few exceptions, and traffic was normal.

“Traffic is moving. We are trying to keep the roads clear, however, there are few blockades here and there,” Singh reportedly said.

As per media reports, the chakka bandh hit vehicular traffic on the highway between Pasighat to Pangin, between Pangin to Boleng towards Yingkiong, Upper Siang district and Pangin to Aalo road towards West Siang district.

The people of Pangin circle called for the bandh as a mark of protest against the shifting of headquarter site, the decision which is supposed to be taken in the ongoing Cabinet meeting.

It may be mentioned that Pangin town is functioning as the temporary headquarters of Siang district. The new site for the district headquarters is presumed to be near Boleng town in Saing district.
