The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgement on Aadhaar. It thanked the court for “supporting and protecting the Congress vision”.

“Aadhaar was an instrument of empowerment and meant for giving an identity to marginalised people but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) misused it as a tool of oppression and surveillance by harassing public to connect it to bank, mobile, welfare schemes and educational institutions. BJP making Aadhaar link mandatory for uncounted domain was a conspiracy, a fraud on the people and Constitution by violating the rights of people to boost their vested interests,” APCC vice-president Minkir Lollen said in a statement.

“BJP may have extended disguised appreciation of Supreme Court verdict as pro-poor, victory of democracy or empowerment, but the fact is that the verdict is a big slap on the party’s face. The verdict has exposed BJP’s naysayer attitude towards development and welfare of the people of the country,” he said.

“Now, the delinking of Aadhaar from private entities will save the people from (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi’s draconian rule and fear of personal information being misused by the private entities and it will also protect their rights to privacy,” Lollen said.

The APCC wondered what more scam the BJP would orchestrate against the people. “Aren’t promises of achhe din, demonetisation, Rs 15 lakh in every account, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, housing for all by 2022, job scam at Krishi Bhawan and 2 crore employment not enough?” Lollen asked.
