Arunachal likely to extend lockdown in Itanagar

The Arunachal Pradesh government is likely to extend the ongoing lockdown in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) till July 31 with certain relaxations in the offing.

According to sources in the government, the lockdown is being extended in view of the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the region.

“Some relaxations would, however, be offered during this period,” sources said.

“Details of restrictions and relaxations would be given out by chief secretary Naresh Kumar through a press briefing on Sunday,” sources added.

Following a spurt in the number of Covid-19 positive cases, the state’s health department had on Friday asked the government to extend the lockdown.

The ICR that consists of Itanagar, the state capital, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa and in Doimukh in Papum Pare district is already under lockdown since July 6.

Out of the 66 new cases reported on Friday, the ICR alone reported 58 new cases taking the number of active cases in the region to 295, the highest in the state.

The ICR is followed by Changlang with 37 active cases while Namsai and East Siang districts have 29 and 21 active cases respectively.

Arunachal Pradesh at present has 497 active cases while 197 people have recovered from the virus so far. The state has registered 3 Covid-19 related deaths.
