Guwahati: Four people were killed and three others injured after a major mudslide struck a construction site in the Niti Vihar area of Itanagar on Monday evening.
The incident occurred when a portion of land suddenly caved in at a private residence where a retaining wall was under construction, trapping several people under a massive pile of mud and debris.
Itanagar Deputy Commissioner Toko Babu confirmed that all the bodies of the victims have been recovered following a rescue operation carried out by the authorities.
The deceased have been identified as Choki Tasar, Ratan Burman, Godak Raja and Godak Tabin. Meanwhile, the injured โ Tatung Tajit, Choki Takio and Hasinoor Ali, were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar said the injured are currently undergoing medical care.
Authorities received a distress call at around 4:30 pm, following which rescue teams rushed to the site and launched an operation to retrieve those trapped under the mud.
Senior officials, including Itanagar SP Jummar Basar, Assistant Commissioner Tamo Dada, District Disaster Management Officer Moromi Sonam and SDRF Additional SP Moyir Basar Kamdak, were present at the location to supervise the rescue efforts.
Officials said the operation proved particularly challenging due to the large volume of accumulated mud at the site. The body of Choki Tasar was the last to be recovered as rescuers struggled to clear the debris.
According to preliminary reports, most of the deceased were relatives who had been present at the site to oversee the ongoing construction work.
Police said a case is yet to be formally registered in connection with the incident.
The Itanagar Capital Region has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few days.
