The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), People’s Party of Arunachal, Janata Dal (Secular) and National People’s Party have announced to go ahead with its first phase of democratic movement in the form a peaceful dharna in front of the Raj Bhawan here.

Seeking CM Pema Khandu’s resignation on moral grounds for his alleged failure to control law and order situation in state, or else his sacking if he fails to resign, the opposition parties had on Wednesday served a three-day ultimatum to Governor B D Mishra here.

“Since, there has been no response on our demands, the first phase of democratic movement –a daylong peaceful dharna– will be jointly staged by the opposition parties in front of the Raj Bhawan from 9 am on Saturday,” a statement from Congress spokesperson Mina Toko said today.

The chief minister has lost the moral right to govern the State as he has pushed the socio-political condition of Arunachal to an all time low, Toko said while adding that the chief secretary along with the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Capital Complex are solely responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Besides the resignation of chief minister, the opposition parties have also been demanding that the three youths who lost their lives during the anti-Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) agitation be declared as martyrs and state honour be given to them posthumously.

The State government has on the other hand announced for a judicial probe into the large scale rioting, violence and vandalism that took place following the recent anti-PRC protest in the capital, which resulted in death of three youths, injuries to many and huge loss of public and private properties.

The government recently also issued a gazette notification putting the PRC proposal that caused mayhem to rest once and for all.
