Dhemaji: A long-running dispute over the operation of a ferro-silicon factory at the Niglok Industrial Growth Centre (IGC) in Arunachal Pradeshโs East Siang district has been temporarily resolved, with protesters agreeing to suspend their agitation for six months under specific conditions.
The year-long protest had disrupted the supply of raw materials and machinery to the plant. Relief came after a consultative meeting held on Tuesday(28 April)at Ngorlung village community hall, convened by Ruksin Additional Deputy Commissioner Kiran Ningo. The meeting was attended by local villagers, stakeholders, and representatives of the company, M/s Aether Alloys LLP.
Local residents had strongly opposed the factory, alleging that emissions of smoke and dust were causing severe air and water pollution. Villagers from seven nearby areas claimed that the pollution had led to serious health issues and crop damage. They also expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of response from both the state government and the company, which had earlier led them to launch an intense โdo or dieโ protest.
Tensions had escalated in February when police escorted trucks carrying materials to the site following a High Court directive. Villagers blocked the road, leading to clashes in which four policemen were injured.
The issue also drew the attention of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Kolkata bench, which took suo motu cognisance based on media reports. A petition filed by a local forum is currently under hearing.
Following discussions, protesters agreed to lift the blockade temporarily. During this period, a joint expert team will monitor pollution levels, assess air quality, and conduct health check-ups for affected residents. Compensation for crop losses is also to be ensured.
Villagers warned that any violation of environmental norms during the observation period could result in the factory being shut down or relocated.
