Guwahati: Relentless monsoon rains have caused severe damage across Arunachal Pradesh, with a key highway linking Manmao and Changlang collapsing at multiple locations, disrupting connectivity and leaving several areas vulnerable to isolation.
The road cave-in occurred following days of intense rainfall that triggered landslides, flash floods, and soil erosion across Changlang district. Officials said sections of the highway suffered extensive damage as swollen streams and runoff weakened the road embankments, rendering the route unsafe for vehicular movement.
The collapse has significantly affected transportation in the district, hampering the movement of residents, essential supplies, and emergency services. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid the affected stretch while assessment and restoration work are underway.
The latest incident adds to the growing impact of the monsoon across Arunachal Pradesh, where heavy rainfall has already disrupted road connectivity in several districts. Reports indicate that landslides and flooding have damaged infrastructure, blocked highways and cut off access to remote areas in parts of the state.
District officials and disaster management teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and initiate relief measures. Engineers are assessing the extent of the damage on the Manmao-Changlang route, while efforts are being made to restore connectivity at the earliest.
Residents have expressed concern over recurring road failures during the monsoon season, noting that the highway serves as a crucial lifeline for communities in the region. The disruption is expected to affect daily travel, trade activities, and access to essential services if restoration is delayed.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has warned of continued rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh in the coming days, raising fears of further landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas. Authorities have urged people living near rivers, streams and landslide-prone slopes to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
With monsoon conditions expected to persist, the state government is closely monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating with local administrations to ensure timely response and relief operations.
