The army is optimistic about the outcome of the political dialogue with the Naga rebel groups and feels the situation on the border with China is improving.

“The counter-insurgency situation is under control and we are confident things will only improve henceforth. In Nagaland, talks with NSCN (I-M) and Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) are at an advanced stage.,” said Lt Gern MM Navarane , GOC-in-C, Eastern Command.

Lt Gen Navarane said that Khango Konyak led faction of NSCN(K) has recently joined the working committee of the NNPGs recently and had thus became a part of the peace process.

The army commander was distributing gallantry medals at Fort William last night.

He said strong vigil is maintained on the Indo-Myanmar border and movement of various rebel groups was under constant surveillance.

“Strengthening of the border protection regime is also underway,” he said.

Lt Gen Navarane said that reports of a resurgence of the ULFA(I) in Assam was being carefully monitored and suitable counter measures were bring initiated.

He said the army was always reviewing the situation to fine tune its operations.

Navarane said that military to military interaction between India and China has improved at all levels.

“That is contributing towards operationalizing the strategic consensus between ground troops and commanders at functional levels .”

“The Chinese have now proposed sporting events inside their territory at designated bases/camps and we are considering it,” the general said.
