Another independent MLA, Michael T Sangma has resigned as member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly paving the way for his entry into the ruling Congress and contest as its candidate from Tikrikilla constituency.

Michael, who got elected for the first time as Independent from Tikrikilla in the 2013 Assembly elections, will contest as Congress candidate.

His resignation letter was accepted by the Assembly Speaker, Abu Taher Mondal on Wednesday.

With Michael’s resignation, the 60-member Assembly has been reduced to 43 now.

On Tuesday, two MLAs, Marthon Sangma of the Nationalist Congress Party, and Independent, Brigady Marak resigned as members of the Meghalaya Assembly. Both of them will be the candidates of the ruling Congress in the ensuing Assembly polls slated for February 27 next.

Another independent MLA from Rajabala, Ashahel D Shira is also likely to contest on Congress ticket.
