Angry tribal villagers in Marangjing and Kharam in Tamenglong started blocking the construction work of railway lines after Chief Minister N Biren Singh gave a blind look to their demands.

The tribal in the area set a railway jeep on fire and damaged another vehicle on Saturday night. No one has been arrested in the connection till the filing of the report.

The villagers have complained that two persons — Ph Dangmei and Ph Lovejoy had taken a huge amount as compensation from the government with false documents. Construction of the railway line to Manipur capital from Barak Valley in south Assam was scheduled to be completed in 2021.

The villagers alleged that a section of officials of the district administration of Tamenglong had swindled the land compensation fund using the name of two persons who had no land in the area.

The villagers had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh on December 10, and had demanded for an inquiry by the Chief Secretary. As the Chief Minister allegedly did not take cognizance of the complaint, the villagers started obstructing the construction work of the railway project since December 20.

The agitating villagers are demanding legal action against the district officials and recovery of the compensation amount fraudulently taken by the two persons.
