AKRSU will rekindle the embers of agitation demanding ST status and separate Kamatapur. The student body has threatened to boycott upcoming panchayat polls if government fails to fulfill their demands.

Newly elected president of AKRSU Arun Roy said “If the government does not grant us ST status soon and also fails to solve the Kamatapur issue then we will boycott panchayat election and the forthcoming LS elections too.”

The special convention of the AKRSU held at Fakiragram in Kokrajhar formed a new committee with Arun Roy as president and Gakul Barman as secretary.

Talking to reporters, newly elected general secretary of the union Gakul Barman said, “Earlier we had two factions – one led by Hiteswar Barman and the other by Pradip Ray. But now we have become united with the help of unification committee, intellectuals and common people. We are a single entity now.”

Barman also said, “Soon we are going to hold a meeting of our new committee members. We are contemplating to launch a series of agitation for long pending issues of Kamatapur and ST status.”

In this special convention of the AKRSU, the two factions of the students’ body were united and resolved to launch several agitation programmes to fulfill their demands. The unification of the two factions was possible due to the consistent efforts of the intellectuals and common people.
