Along with other parts of the nation, Sikkim also joined the nationwide celebrations of the AFC Women’s Football Day 2018 on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on Thursday.

Sikkim Football Association (SFA) celebrated the AFC Women’s Football Day 2018 with various events in different parts of the State. On the occasion, a total of 300 girl footballers of the State participated in various events at Gangtok, Pakyong, Soreng, Gyalshing, Namchi and Mangan.

SFA President Menla Ethenpa declared the festival open at Paljor Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Sixty footballers from Gangtok and surrounding areas participated in the celebration at Paljor Stadium.

On the occasion, all participants have been provided with T-shirts with the slogan – #SHEPOWER on the back.

On the occasion, SFA President Ethenpa stated that through such festivals, the Sikkim Football Association has been trying to provide equal opportunity to girls and encourage them to come forward in football.

Ethenpa mentioned that AFC has been fostering women’s football for its development through such programme. He informed that the AIFF was also organise the Indian Women’s Football League this year for the first time.

The programme was also attended by SFA Vice-President Dr Sonam T Ethenpa, Executive Members Chung Chung Bhutia and Susan Lachungpa and international footballers Puspa Gurung and Anuradha Chettri from Sikkim.
