Dibrugarh police arrested a person on Thursday in connection with the alleged murder of two women in the moving trains even as cops released a sketch of the accused.

Sources said based on CCTV visuals obtained from Dibrugarh Railway Station, police arrested the man from Chiring Chapori area of Dibrugarh district suspecting his involvement in the twin murders.

The arrested person has been identified as Kanak Gogoi, according to reports by DY 365. Gogoi, reportedly a mentally unstable, was earlier arrested by police for murdering his wife and was out on bail recently.

While Assam Agricultural University (AAU) student Radha Kumari was found murdered in the toilet of the Dibrugarh-Rangiya Express at Simaluguri in Sivasagar district on Tuesday, another woman aged about 45 years was found murdered in the toilet of down Avadh Assam Express at the Mariani station in Jorhat district on Wednesday.

The semi clad body of Lalima Debi of Kodomoni Boiragi Math in Dibrugarh with a cloth tied around her neck was found at the toilet of the train.

Two days after the murder of Radha Kumari, the Sivasagar police on Thursday released a sketch of the accused.

“Based on the description given by the mother of Radha Kumari, Debasis Benerjee, an artist from Kolkata, drew a sketch of the accused. It will be sent to all local police stations and other police departments as well,” a top police official told Northeast Now.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by Assam police to probe the murder of the 21-year-old AAU student visited her residence at Sivasagar and spoke to her mother.

The NF Railway, meanwhile, swung into action to ensure safety of passengers following the gruesome murders of the two women on moving trains. The Railway authorities have instructed the officials of the Tinsukia division to escort all SLR and disabled coaches of the mail as well passenger trains during day time.

The ADGP of Government Railway Police R Chandranathan visited Simaluguri railway station to investigate the incident amidst protest launched by the workers of Nazira Block Mahila Congress.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the murder of Radha Kumari besides demanding that the security of the train passengers be ensured.
